HODL is short for – Hold On for Dear Life. It originated as a misspelling of word ‘hold’ by a user -‘GameKyuubi’ in December 2013 in Bitcoin forum.

The user ‘GameKyuubi’ on BitcoinTalk was stating that despite the crash he’s holding Bitcoin. Here’s is the screenshot:

The word caught on from there and became slang word in cryptocurrencies ecosystem to refer to someone who buys & hold investor.

It is especially used by people who accept and admit that they don’t have the required skills or knack for taking benefit of small time price movement by scalping, swing trading or day trading.

This term is most commonly used whenever there is price crash in crypto markets and Bitcoin in particular.
